Cultural Crossroads: The Middle East in World History (Grades 4 - 8) TEWS667N
From the legacy of Rome, to the exchange of goods, ideas, and religions across Europe, Asia and Africa, the Middle East has played a key role in world history. This course will introduce new ways of teaching about China, Africa, the European Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Silk Routes and Indian Ocean travel with an emphasis on incorporating the role of Islam into these studies. To further this goal will look at a variety of hands-on teaching strategies that integrate English, art, science and mathematics.

Joan Brodsky Schur is the author of Eyewitness to the Past: Strategies for Teaching American History in Grades 5-12, Immigrants in America: The Arab Americans, and Editor of Coming to America: The Arabs. Her articles on teaching about Islam have appeared in numerous professional journals and she has written lesson plans for a variety of Websites including The Islam Project.org. Schur serves as Social Studies Coordinator at the Village Community School in New York City.

Peace Education within a Prescribed Curriculum (Grades 1 - 6) TEED562N
This course presents a model of peace education and prescribed curriculum integration. Participants will examine the theory and practice of peace education, and then explore methods for developing programs which promote cooperation, respect for self and others, and appreciation of cultural diversity. Students also will develop specific methods (lessons, units, and projects) that support peace education while being accountable to state standards. This class will focus on deliberately creating a community of learners in both classroom and in museum settings.

Heidi Steinberger currently teaches fourth grade at The Emily Dickenson School: PS 75, in NYC. Previously, she worked at Pacific Oaks College and Children's School in California as Human Development Adjunct Faculty and Master Lead Teacher/Peace Education Coordinator, Multi-Subject.

Research Skills: A Classroom Approach (Grades 4 - 8) TEED554N
Research papers frequently hold untold terror for the students who must write them and the teachers who assign them, yet research can be an intellectually satisfying pursuit for students. This course takes the fear out of research in any subject area. Participants will learn about the writing process, cooperative learning strategies, the use of print and electronic resources, and classroom methods for managing whole-group as well as independent research projects.
*This course addresses the Language Arts Standards for upper elementary and middle school grades.

Sam Brian teaches in both Bank Street College's School for Children and the Graduate School. In addition, he is a writer and educational consultant, and also the Director of the Geography and Mapping Institute, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to staff development in the area of geography education.
