Agenda:
1. Welcome & Roll Call (Toni Porter)
2. Recap of Meeting Survey Responses (Rachel Hass)
Ø Overall, there is a strong interest in practice and programs:
o How to measure programs≠ effects
o Interest in shaping policy
· Toni asked for reactions to the survey results:
Ø Rae Anderson said that the results aren≠t surprising- we have a strong base of interest and awareness.
Ø Alice Womack mentioned the importance of working with state legislatures to bring together state child care administrators and family, friend and neighbor practitioners. How can states work to bring these people together?
Ø Sheila Wills indicated that First Five LA California has a work force development initiative that includes funding for supports for license-exempt providers.
Ø Paula Steinke indicated that WA≠s Department of Early Learning now has a line item for family, friend and neighbor caregivers.
Ø Toni mentioned that in Hawaii, family, friend and neighbor child care is a major policy issue.
3. Committee Work (Toni Porter & former committee members)
· Meeting Planning Committee:
Ø Rae Anderson shared her experience as co-chair of meeting planning committee, describing the monthly calls, reporting out, steering committee, subgroups, and the importance of planning early for the meeting.
Ø Interested in Meeting Planning Committee:
Jackie Thurnau; Erika Alvarez; Aminah Wyatt; Justine Strickland; Sheila Wills; Kerry Caverly; Nina Sazer O≠Donnell
Later, Rae wrote to explain how the Meeting Planning Committee worked last year:
≥For clarification the Annual Meeting Planning Subcommittee met once a month for a full conference call. We had co-chairs for the Subcommittee and held our first meeting in March. We accomplished our planning through three separate "workgroups" - Best Program Practices, Policy, and Research - as these were topics identified for the annual meeting. Each of the workgroups had a lead person who was responsible for scheduling/facilitating conference calls as needed to follow-up on specific tasks related to their topic (identifying presenters, contacting and confirming presenters, etc). The Annual Meeting Planning Subcommittee included approximately 14 people (when we started). In reality - about four people did the majority of the work. This was clearly not enough 'manpower' and these folks were stretched beyond what they had bargained for. A committed group of 8 - 10 people could manage the workload and effectively plan the annual meeting. It will be important to finalize plans for a meeting space as soon as possible, and for Bank Street to confirm, in order to avoid some of the last minute logistical issues we had last year. The 2006 meeting survey responses should be very helpful to plan for this year.≈ Best, Rae
· Publications/Website Committee:
Ø Rena Rice said that the website will be a major focus this year, and that we aim to develop a section on practice that will include materials
Ø Rachel Hass added that the section about practice would include articles and profiles describing different program approaches.
Ø Sheila Wills suggested there be a section presenting narratives by providers and practitioners.
Ø Rena added that if anyone has materials already written, it would be good to think about including this.
Ø Toni added another idea about a section for shared materials and curriculum. Also, there could be a subsection of the practice section on Play & Learn as well as other types of programming.
Ø Other ideas for website to include:
o Presentations from different programs (eg: Tutu & Me at NAFFNCC 2006 meeting)
o Links to Research Connections with Lee Kreader
Ø Lee Kreader discussed the NAFFNCC connection with Research Connections: Research Connections commissioned papers around family, friend, and neighbor child care on issues about program evaluation and measurement of quality. Access to articles on family, friend, and neighbor child care is now easier, since it is noted as a Key Topic.
Ø Interested in the Website/Publications Committee:
Paula Steinke; Rena Rice; Rachel Hass; Taryn Morrisey; Gail Omoto; Lee Kreader
· There was a discussion about the way a Practice Committee, a Research Committee, and a Policy Committee should be structured and what their relationship to the Meeting Planning Committee and the Publications/Website Committee will be. The discussion will continue during our next call.
